Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act — the founding moment of the entire national park movement that would spread to over 100 countries. The park covers 2.2 million acres across Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, and sits directly on top of one of the largest active volcanic systems on Earth: the Yellowstone Caldera, a supervolcano roughly 55 kilometres wide. That underground heat is what powers the park's 10,000+ geothermal features — more than half of all the geysers on the planet. Mammoth Hot Springs is unlike any of them. The terraces are built from travertine — a form of limestone that forms when hot mineral-rich water rises through ancient sedimentary rock, dissolves the calcium carbonate on its way up, and then deposits it as pale stone the moment it hits the cold mountain air. The colours come from thermophilic bacteria and cyanobacteria that thrive at different water temperatures — coral pink, burnt orange, cream, gold. The whole formation grows by about 60 centimetres a year, meaning the terraces you see today are literally not the same shape they were last summer.
