Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas — both are included. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY The Yerevan Cascade — Երևանյան կասկադ in Armenian — is a monumental limestone stairway rising 500 metres up the northern hillside of central Yerevan, from Tamanyan Park at the bottom to the Monument neighbourhood at the top. It was first designed in the 1920s by the great Armenian architect Alexander Tamanyan as part of his master plan for the modern Soviet Armenian capital — a grand ceremonial link between the lower city and the heights above. Construction did not begin until the 1970s, was interrupted by the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and stalled for over a decade with the huge structure sitting half-finished above the city. In 2002, Armenian-American businessman and philanthropist Gerard L. Cafesjian stepped in with a private donation of over $35 million to finish the project and transform it into a cultural centre. It reopened in 2009 as the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, and today the 572-step Cascade holds one of the most impressive contemporary sculpture collections in the entire Caucasus — including several monumental bronze works by Colombian artist Fernando Botero (the famous rotund "Cat" at the base is one of the most photographed pieces of public art in the region), plus works by Barry Flanagan, Lynn Chadwick, Jaume Plensa and dozens of others. The terraced fountains and stone landings were designed with a modernist geometric aesthetic that carries Tamanyan's original Soviet-Armenian architectural DNA into the 21st century. At night the whole structure is lit in warm amber, the fountains glow, the sculptures throw long shadows, and locals climb the steps at every hour of the evening. From the top landing, on a clear night, Mount Ararat sits low on the southern horizon — a silhouette watching over the city that has watched over it back for 2,800 years.
