Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was declared China's very first national forest park in 1982 and became the core of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. The park is famous for its more than 3,000 vertical quartz-sandstone pillars — some over 800 metres tall — carved by 380 million years of rain, wind and ice erosion. In 2008, one of the pillars, formerly known as "Southern Sky Column," was officially renamed "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" after James Cameron's film production team confirmed it was one of the primary visual references for the floating Hallelujah Mountains in the 2009 movie. The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge — designed by Israeli-Canadian architect Haim Dotan — opened on August 20, 2016 and set five world records at once: the world's longest and tallest glass-bottom bridge, the world's highest bungee jump platform, the longest single-panel glass bridge span, the widest all-glass bridge, and the first bridge with pure translucent glass railings. It spans 430 metres across the canyon and hangs 300 metres above the river below — over 100 storeys of clear air under your feet. The glass panels are 99 millimetres thick, made of three layers of tempered safety glass laminated together, and each one can hold the weight of eight adults standing on a single tile. The engineers famously demonstrated the bridge's safety before opening it to the public by smashing individual panels with sledgehammers while people continued walking across.
