It covers roughly 596 square kilometres of towering Navajo sandstone cliffs, slot canyons and hanging gardens, cut by the Virgin River — which drops more elevation per kilometre than the Colorado through the Grand Canyon, and which carved Zion Canyon over the last 240 million years. Human beings have lived in the canyon for at least 8,000 years. The Ancestral Puebloans farmed the canyon floor from around 500 AD, followed by the Southern Paiute, who named the area Mukuntuweap — "straight canyon." In 1858, Mormon pioneer Nephi Johnson became the first white settler to enter the canyon, and Mormon farmers who followed named the great sandstone peaks after biblical figures: Angels Landing, the Court of the Patriarchs, the Great White Throne — and The Watchman, the towering red monolith that stands guard over the south entrance and every sunset in the park. Zion was established as a national monument in 1909 and became a national park on November 19, 1919 — Utah's very first.
